DENGUE NOW A GLOBAL THREAT, AFFECTS 1.8 BILLION IN RP, ASIA PACIFIC
MANILA, OCTOBER 16, 2010 (STAR) By Mayen Jaymalin (The Philippine Star) - The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that dengue has become a global health threat with 1.8 billion people in the Philippines and other countries in the Asia Pacific vulnerable to the disease.
WHO said that in the past 10 years, the frequency and size of dengue outbreaks in the Western Pacific Region, including the Philippines, have risen. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Philippines were the most affected. Of the estimated 2.5 billion people susceptible to dengue globally, about 1.8 billion live in Asia Pacific countries.
Dr. Shin Young-soo, WHO’s regional director for the Western Pacific, said governments in the region need to invest in greater advocacy and better clinic management of the disease.
“National resources need to be mobilized to sustain dengue prevention and control, and the disease’s profile needs to be raised on the global health agenda to stimulate the interest of international agencies and donors,” Shin said.
The rise in dengue cases globally has been attributed to global warming, but there is still no clear evidence for this claim.
The WHO, however, said changes in the climate contribute to the increase of the dengue-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Dr. Hans Troedsson, WHO’s director for Program Management in the Western Pacific Region, said governments must take a broad approach to suppress the spread of the disease, such as focusing on urban planning and sanitation (http://www.newsflash.org/hlframe.htm).
Opinion:
It is true that dengue is a threat because there are so many symptoms. For me, its hard to identify if its a sysmtoms of dengue. To avoid dengue we should clean our surrounding. There are so many people died because of dengue and some cases are children. It only means that we should be aware and we should be responsible to our health because dengue is "traidor na sakit".
Philippines: Catholic Church asks Aquino to drop contraceptives program
“We bishops from all over the country call on President Aquino to listen to the call of the Philippine Church that the former program of the government to promote a contraceptive mentality through education and medical practices is immoral and will not bring about a people that is God-fearing, holding on to the sacredness of sexuality, life and the family,” the bishops said through CBCP president, Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar who issued the one-page statement.
“With the new government, we bishops join the Filipino people in the hope that there will be changes that will truly bring good governance to the country,” they added.
During the last Congress, the CBCP succeeded in derailing the passage of the so-called reproductive health bill, which proponents say would strengthen programs to promote maternal and child health and responsible parenthood.
But the Catholic Church hierarchy opposed the bill for promoting artificial contraceptives along with “natural” methods, as well as for mandating sex education from Grade 5 up to high school.
In their statement, the bishops said “there are no changes in the stand of the Church” about the reproductive health bill and the sex education modules being pilot-tested in selected elementary and high schools.
“The Church is always concerned with the poor and the many Church institutions and groups that help the poor bear this out,” they said.
“Poverty cannot be solved by promoting contraceptive education and programs. Education does not merely deal with knowledge and skills; rather it must promote values that are inherent to us as Filipinos. Parents have the primary right to educate their children and sex education is properly to be done in the family,” they went on.
Opinion:
As a student I dont agree that contraceptives will be implemented because it is not the answer to lessen the population and to stop poverty. Dont they think that if ever it will be implemented more teenagers will engage to that kind of doing. And as a Roman Chatolic, Jesus said "go to the world and multiply".
Students, teachers oppose 2 more years of basic education MANILA, Philippines - Two legislators are urging the Department of Education (DepEd) to rethink its proposal to add 2 years to basic education as it may only lead to more children out of school. House Deputy Speaker Maria Isabelle Climaco and Maguindanao Rep. Simeon Datumanong issued their call after consulting high school teachers and students in Zamboanga City last Friday (August 13).
In a statement, Climaco said majority of students and teachers they consulted opposed the additional 2 years "due to added expenses" for the family.
Teachers said the government should instead address the lack of teachers and poor infrastructure rather than add 2 years to basic elementary and high school education.
"Overcrowded classrooms lead to poor learning. As a teacher, I call on DepEd to seriously study the proposal. I further recommend intensified teacher training to equip our educators,” said Climaco.
Climaco graduated from Ateneo de Zamboanga University with a degree in secondary
education.
Climaco said the consultations were done in 2 schools--the Regional Science High School and Zamboanga City High School. Some teachers, however, favored the government's plan to add 2 years to basic education, she said.
Datumanong warned the proposal "may result to more youth out of school."
The DepEd believes adding 2 more years to basic education would allow more students to finish high school, making them more employable.
The Aquino government said adding 2 more years is also in line with the length of basic education in other countries".
Opinion:
First and foremost, our basic education first must be improved. Retain 6 years of primary/elementary education, retain 4 years of secondary education.Adding 1 year to primary/elemenatry education then adding another year to secondary education is a waste. The DEPED should reconsider this wasteful idea. Some school classrooms are overcrowded already. Some schools even lack enough classrooms. The DEPED should focus on improving these facilities and the quality of teachers.

The Philippine Hostage Bus Drama - A failed Rescue Attempt
On Aug 23, 2010 a former Filipino police officer had held Hong Kong tourists hostage by hijacking their bus in Manila. Rolando Mendoza fired his M16 rifle at the tourists. a number of hostages have been rescued but 8 have been confirmed dead. Six hostages, including the children and elderly, were freed early, as were the Filipino photographers. The photographers shortly took the place of an aged lady as she needed the lavatory. Mendoza was gunned down by the sniper after almost 12 hours standoff.Mendoza was removed from the Police Force after extortion and drugs claims. His brother explained that 'his problem was he was unjustly removed from service. There was no due process, no hearing, and no complaint.' Both local government officials and his brother had tried to negotiate with him to release the hostages but failed.
Gunshots were heard inside the bus and Mendoza was shot down. The police rescued the hostages on the bus. The number of survivors totaled seven. Eight were confirmed dead http://hubpages.com/hub/bushotagedrama.
Opinion:
In my own opinion of what happen last august 23, 2010, Hostage Drama is a serious case to any force and it should be given appropriate attention as much as possible. If the hostage crisis involves foreigners and Government officials then it is a case that the Government must come to its attention and do something. It is very obvious that Hijackers would always look for media attention to relay their grievances and demands. One of the reasons why the hijacker started shooting the hostages was the media coverage of the arrest of his brother and relatives who wanted to do the negotiation but was not given permission. They should not arrest his brother because the hostage taker think that his demand is useless. The incharge of hostage taking is wrong to his decision, they should give what the hostage taker wants because the hostage taker wants omly to be back to his work, if those where happen ("sana kung pinagbigyan nila 'yong hiling ni Mendoza hindi sana aabot sa ganon.Pwede nman nila pag.usapan yon kung pinag.bigyan lng siya.Kahiya-hoya tuloy yong mga polis sa palpak nilang trabaho".

Case 5
- The Influence of Technology in our Lives
- Changing the Way We Think
- How The Internet Affects Your Brain
Like most things, the Internet has its good and its dark side. And, considering the pervasiveness of the Internet in society, it is certainly having an effect on our brains. After all, everything we do affects our brain. Though up until the 1980’s, it was universally believed that the steam engine was the foremost invention of the Industrial Revolution, technology and science historian, Lewis Mumford, had long before proposed that that clock was in fact the key machine of the modern Industrial age. And, just as people began operating and planning according to seconds and minutes, in the age of the internet, we are rewiring our “plastic” brain to function more and more like computers. Processing, decoding and storing floods of information at a rate faster than we ever have before, our brains are becoming highly adapted to taking on scores of tasks at once.

Case 4
- Operational benefits - Despite the pervasive presence of IT in modern business, the operation of increasingly sophisticated data processing environments is often not a core competency for many organizations.
- Technological benefits - Achieving IT efficiencies may be an organization’s major expectation from outsourcing. By outsourcing, an organization may have access to people, processes and technology that it might not otherwise economically obtain.
- Financial benefits - An important benefit often sought by management in IT outsourcing decisions is financial in nature. Outsourcing offers the possibility of bringing IT costs under control through the efficiencies that might be delivered by the service provider or the sharing of common costs among the service provider’s customer base.
ADVANTAGES OF OUTSOURCING
Cost savings- Many businesses embrace outsourcing as a way to realize cost savings or better cost control over the outsourced function. Companies usually outsource to a vendor that specializes in a given function and performs that function more efficiently than the company could, simply by virtue of transaction volume.
Staffing levels-Another common reason for outsourcing is to achieve headcount reductions or minimize the fluctuations in staffing that may occur due to changes in demand for a product or service.
Focus- Some companies outsource in order to eliminate distractions and force themselves to concentrate on their core competencies.
Morale- This is an often-overlooked but still notable benefit that can sometimes be gained by initiating an outsourcing relationship
Flexibility- Still others outsource to achieve greater financial flexibility, since the sale of assets that formerly supported an outsourced function can improve a company's cash flow
- Knowledge- Some experts tout outsourcing of computer programming and other information technology functions as a way to gain access to new technology and outside expertise.
- Accountability- Outsourcing is predicated on the understanding—shared by business and vendor alike—that such arrangements require quality service in exchange for payment.
Bad Publicity and ill-will- If your friends and neighbors lost their jobs because they were shipped across the state, across the country or across the world, outsourcing will bring bad publicity. If you outsource part of your operations, morale may suffer in the remaining work force.
Tied to the Financial Well-Being of Another Company- Since you will be turning over part of the operations of your business to another company, you will now be tied to the financial well-being of that company. It wouldn't be the first time that an outsourcing company could go bankrupt and leave you holding-the-bag.
Quality Problems- The outsourcing company will be motivated by profit. Since the contract will fix the price, the only way for them to increase profit will be to decrease expenses. As long as they meet the conditions of the contract, you will pay.
Loss Of Managerial Control-Whether you sign a contract to have another company perform the function of an entire department or single task, you are turning the management and control of that function over to another company.
Hidden Costs- You will sign a contract with the outsourcing company that will cover the details of the service that they will be providing.
Threat to Security and Confidentiality- The life-blood of any business is the information that keeps it running. If you have payroll, medical records or any other confidential information that will be transmitted to the outsourcing company, there is a risk that the confidentiality may be compromised.
Implications of IT outsourcing
Outsourcing Jobs
The jobs in India created due to outsourcing are mainly back office and research and development jobs such as Call centers, transaction processing, Chip design, Software development services, financial research, medical transcription, IT consulting, product design, tax processing and the like. These outsourcing jobs are mainly seen in the financial, insurance, technical, software and banking sectors.
The Impact of Global Service Delivery on IS Organizations
Offshore outsourcing, which is itself a manifestation of the global service delivery model, has emerged both as an opportunity and as a threat to many IS organizations. On the opportunity side, offshore outsourcing is a fiscally sound way to distribute work globally, take advantage of regional labor markets and reduce operating costs. Moreover, the general pursuit of outsourcing, ironically, raises the business credibility of the IS organization.

The CIO typically reports to the chief executive officer, chief operations officer or chief financial officer. In military organizations, they report to the commanding officer.Information technology and its systems have become so important that CIO has come to be viewed in many organizations as the key contributor in formulating strategic goals for an organization. Most likely, the CIO in a large enterprise manages and delegates decisions to employees more with details. Usually, a CIO proposes the information technology needed by an enterprise to achieve its goals and then works within a budget to implement the plan. The CIO role is also sometimes used interchangeably with the chief technology officer role, although they may be slightly different. When both positions are present in an organization, the CIO is generally responsible for processes and practices supporting the flow of information, whereas the CTO is generally responsible for technology infrastructure.
Global Warming
The steady rise in global average temperature in recent decades, which experts believe is largely caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions.Global warming and climate change are aspects of our environment that cannot be easily or quickly discounted. Many factions still strongly feel that the changes our Earth is seeing the result of a natural climatic adjustment. Regardless of one’s perspective the effects of global warming are a quantifiable set of environmental results that are in addition to any normal changes in climate. That is why the effects of global warming have catastrophic potential. Global warming may well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. It could turn out to be the difference between a category three hurricane and a category four. Global warming as caused by greenhouse gas emissions can lead us to a definite imbalance of nature.Obviously there is no one magic solution to the problem of global warming. There are hundreds of questions that need to be asked and addressed as to create an overall Earth plan that will develop our planet wisely. The changes we can make, both large and small when combined global warming for the better.

Effect Of Computers
As computers have become less expensive they have been purchased by more and more families for their homes. Because of this, many children begin to use computers at an early age. Even if computers are not available in their home, children almost certainly will begin to come into contact with computers in school.
Some adults are amazed by how readily young children use computers. Many children find that using computers gives them a sense of power and accomplishment. And, unlike many adults whose first or primary contact with computers is work related, most children first use computers for entertainment purposes and games. This is by no means the only use that children have for computers. Children also use computers for accessing information, as well as for writing stories and research papers. Many individuals who work at a computer experience eye-related discomfort and visual problems. However, based on current evidence it is unlikely that the use ofcomputers causes permanent changes or damage to the eyes or visual system. This report will review the factors relating to eye and vision problems associated with computer work and provide recommendations for preventing or reducing their development.
Effect of Computers in an Organizations and in our Planet
Our lives have been permanently altered due to technology, especially computers. Everything we do revolves around computers.Although there is a lot less actual interaction between people because of computers, they are not all bad. They allow people to talk to friends and family that are far away without having to pay the long distance phone bill. Computers also make our lives easier. In the past, grocery store cashiers had to memorize all of the prices for the products in their store. Today, the register is computerized and programmed to know the price by reading the bar code. It would be impossible for anyone to know the price of every item in today's stores. Computers also allow people to do their banking and shopping without leaving their home. Almost anything can be bought off of the internet. In relation to the general energy usage of the average person, computers use very little energy, compared to home heating, driving cars. If you generated energy for you home using non-environmentally damaging source like hydro electric, or wind turbines, it would have no damaging effect except for what ever energy was used in its manufacture and transport to your house. Before computers more paper was used and wasted alot more often. Many trees were cut down that could have been save had there have been computers. Now instead of teachers handing out vast quantities of sheets they use a power point presentation.Instead of sending letters now people can send emails, saving paper and energy to transport these letters.Instead of companys printing and posting out invoices and bills they can just send them by email.
Data Center Server
Is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies, redundant data communications connections, environmental controls example:air conditioning, fire suppression and security devices.Data centers have their roots in the huge computer rooms of the early ages of the computing industry. Early computer systems were complex to operate and maintain, and required a special environment in which to operate. Many cables were necessary to connect all the components, and methods to accommodate and organize these were devised, such as standard racks to mount equipment, elevated floors, and cable trays (installed overhead or under the elevated floor). Also, old computers required a great deal of power, and had to be cooled to avoid overheating. Security was important – computers were expensive, and were often used for military purposes. Basic design guidelines for controlling access to the computer room were therefore devised.
CASE 1
1. Who are there competitors?
Nowadays Google is one of the most common research/social networking in the world. But they have so many competitor, like yahoo and so on, some of us satisfied of what Google result but their are some of us don't like the result of Google that's why they use other search engine. Many search technologies base their results on the popularity of a page, or how often it is linked to other pages on the Net. Google has stood apart from competitors for its simple style and relatively noncommercial results. They sells advertising links that appear on the first page of search results, but these are separated from actual query results.Google makes an important, though shrinking, percentage of its money through its friends like America Online and InterActiveCorp. It has a special group known as the Partner Solutions Organization which helps make contracts, helps making accounts better, and gives engineering help.
2. How have they used information technology to their advantage?
As what I've search google have there philosophy on how they used information technology to their advantage, as what I've search they focused on providing the best user experience possible, they designing a new internet browser or a new tweak to the look of the homepage, they take great care to ensure that they will ultimately serve us, rather than our own internal goal or bottom line. Our homepage interface is clear and simple, and pages load instantly. With one of the world's largest research groups focused exclusively on solving search problems, they know how to do well, and how they could do it better.Google search works because it relies on the millions of individuals posting links on websites to help determine which other sites offer content of value.Even we don't know exactly what we are looking for, finding an answer on the web is our problem. We try to anticipate needs not yet articulated by our global audience, and meet them with products and services that set new standards.
3. How competitive are they in the market?
As we know Google is very competitive its because they are all over the world, anyone can use google for searching, posting, etc. Google’s content comprises between 6 and 10 percent of global Internet traffic, making its internal network one of the top three ISPs in the world, according to Arbor Networks. Technology has come a long way since then, and the face of the web has changed. Recognizing that search is a problem that will never be solved, we continue to push the limits of existing technology to provide a fast, accurate and easy-to-use service that anyone seeking information can access. Even a Microsoft won a victory recently against its new and increasingly agile young competitor google in the case of Kai-Fu-Lee, Google continous to nibble at the margins of Microsoft more existential question- the need for its software in the first place in an age when web development archetecture has taken the "Web 2.0" route offered by schemes like AJAX.
4. What new services do they offer?
There so may services that googles offer like:
- Alerts - Get email updates on the topics of your choice
- Blog Search- Find blogs on your favorite topics
- Google Chrome- A browser built for speed, stability and security
- Directory- Search the web, organized by topic or category
- Images- Search for images on the web
- News - Search thousands of news stories
- Scholar- Search scholarly papers
- Web Search- Search billions of web page
- AdWords Editor- Desktop application to manage a google account.
- Earth- Virtual 3D globe that uses satellite imagery, aerial photography and GIS from Google's repository.
- Photos Screensaver - Slideshow screensaver as part of Google Pack.
- Picasa- Photo organization and editing application.
- Sketch Up- Modelling application to sketch simple 3D structures for integration into Google Earth.
- Visigami- Image search application screen saver that searches files from goolge images, picasa and flickrt.
- Gear- A browser plug-in that enables development of off-line browser applications.
- Buzz- Buzz is a social networking service built into Gmail.
- Calendar- Displays a list of all google calendar events on a mobile device.
- Mobile search- Search web pages, images, local listings and mobile-specific web pages through the Google search engine.
- Dashboard- An online tool that allows Google Accoun.
- AdSense- Adverts generate revenue on either a per-click or per-thousand-ads-displayed basis.
5. What makes them so unique?
Google is obviously best known for search and for ads associated with search. This is in essence Google’s one true product. It is the one feature Google developed for the outside world. When Google developed search it was no different from a small company. It is what Google has done since then that makes Google different.Google doesn’t answer to any external power. They don’t have anyone they have to deliver a product to. There is no contract with a deadline. Due to not having any external dependencies, Google can continuously iterate over a product until it reaches a state of near perfection. It can stay in internal testing as long as Google wants and no one is going to care. See Gmail, Google Maps, etc. This then allows Google to use the perfect form of the agile process. Continuous iterations and testing and development, continues improvement. Then as Google sees fit, release the products. As they get better and better, more people use them and more money from ads come in. It’s beautiful.
6. How competitive are they in the international market?
